Living the Good Life

Lounging around my parents new house in central South Dakota is actually quite nice. Literally no one has driven by the house which equates to zero traffic and wildlife is prevalent from the front window. The winter weather and this history-making-blizzard are a little hard to handle for me (because i've been living in SoCal for 2 years now), but it is refreshing.

Getting back home wasn't the easiest venture I have taken, however. I was first delayed in Orange County and then my flight was canceled in Denver. As I am wondering what I am going to do, I start a conversation with some young women in line with me. They are also originally from South Dakota, so immediately have something in common. As we are standing in line to get our new accommodations we start to think about our new possibilities-- get stranded in Denver again or hop in one of the girl's car and road trip to SoDak. Our odds of getting a new flight back to South Dakota weren't looking great, so we started to call our family members and explain to them how we were going to drive home. To our benefit the airline decided to create a new flight for all the Rapid City passengers for the following morning. Unfortunately, this still meant we had to spend the night in Denver, so our new friend offered for us to stay at her place and she would take us to the airport in the morning. Fortunately, we made it to the airport in time and after a few more delays I made it to SoDak in time for Christmas Eve. But this is a testament to show that people are generally good. It may have been our common interest (South Dakota) or it may have the spirit of the holidays.

This Christmas has been uneventful due to the weather, but this way the holidays can be spread out. We had a nice Christmas eve get together and now over new years we will have the traditional get together that we missed on Christmas day due to the weather. My brother ended up getting stranded at his job and had to do a 24 hour shift, but fortunately he got back to the house and was able to rest.

The only thing to do in a blizzard is read, watch tv, and maybe do a little indoor exercise, and then of course eat. So the most productive thing I did today, is some yoga on TV.

The snow drifts are large and the wind is blowing, but this is home and nothing will ever replace it!

What Love Looks Like - Kurt Bensworth

I finished "What Love Looks Like" in record time. I would generally consider myself a slow reader, but somehow I finished this book in a few hours.

Kurt Bensworth's book was overall a joy to read. I was a little apprehensive to read it at first because I generally do not enjoy romantic novels, but thought I would give this book a try mostly because it takes place in Orange County, CA. At first, I thought the book might be a little corny because of the main characters being in high school, but I thought the author portrayed this aspect perfectly.

At times the book is painful because of the heartache, but maybe it was only painful because we have all been there? We all know how it feels to have our hearts broken? I think the central theme of the book is great-- reconnecting with people. I have thought about this concept since reading the book, and I think that generally people do want to be reached out to. People want to reconnect but do not know how. They feel it's too long, or wonder what they would say. According to Bensworth, it's never too late...

NY

I just came back from a first time visit to NYC! Wow, what an amazingly electric vibrant city. Everyone keeps asking me, what did you like best? I can't honestly think of anything that stood out as "best" to me. I enjoyed being in a place that carries so much history mostly. I like seeing the variety of people, cultures, and architecture. Being able to capture some of those iconic images is a necessity for a photographer! I mean, I understand that almost all of the photos I took are exactly the same photos as another, but they are MINE! That's what I love about it! :)

I also spent some time with my best bud. She lives about a 70 miles from NYC. I think keeping relationships strong is what we all crave. In order to do that, we all need to connect with people. I talk to all my friends on a weekly basis, even if it's a simple "hey how's life" message or if it's a quick Instant Messenger chat. Remaining in contact with the people that we value is important and it's always something I strive to do.
